Mosquitoes And Fabrics

For those unaware, mosquitoes have 6 sharp and long mouthparts, also known as proboscis, that can penetrate easily through some fabrics as they do skin. If you are going on an overnight camping trip or a rooftop party, you may want to keep in mind a few tips on what you can wear to prevent mosquitoes biting you through your clothing and actually concentrate on and enjoy your night out really. Below listed are the tips considered on clothing:

Can Mosquitoes Bite Through Clothes?

  • Spraying clothes – As mosquitoes are generally attracted to the smell of sweat of human beings, spraying your skin or clothes with mosquito repellent can help. You can use repellents such as picaridin and DEET, as they easily mask the smell of human sweat, leaving the thirsty mosquitoes searching for dinner elsewhere.
  • Shape and fit of your clothing matters – As commonly observed, mosquitoes are able to easily penetrate through body-hugging, skin-tight, close-fitting, close-fitting clothes such as tights, yoga pants, spandex, etc. Therefore, wearing loose-fitting garments of impenetrable fabric is highly recommended as mosquitoes cannot bite you unless they are able to get inside the garment. Additionally, one should also avoid wearing bell sleeves, loose necklines, or shorter pants. Also, remember to cover your feet and ankles.
  • Colour of your clothing – It is interesting to know that mosquitoes are attracted to heat and darker colors hold in more heat than lighter colors. Light-colored clothing tends to reflect heat off. For instance, black-brown or navy shades can attract more mosquitoes than say a light yellow or a white-colored garment. So you see, the color of your clothing also matters.
  • Clothes treated with Permethrin – Purchasing ready-made clothing treated with Permethrin is yet another solution. Technically, permethrin is not a mosquito repellent, it is an insecticide designed to incapacitate or kill mosquitoes on contact. Clothes treated with permethrin combined with repellents such as DEET can provide up to 100 percent protection against mosquito bites.
  • Corduroy – This tightly and well-knit fabric makes it impossible for mosquitoes to penetrate through them. The thicker the material, the better the protection. Corduroy though may not be considered ideal clothing during the warmer months.
  • Proper footwear and face tucking – If you’re going to be in a buggy area like the woods or the garden, you can opt for something with more coverage to protect your delicate feet and ankles from mosquito bites. Usually, rubber boots or pairing sneakers with socks should do the trick. You may also want to tuck your pants into your socks to 100 percent seal the foot area. Women can tie a scarf to conceal the ears, neck, and mouth. Men can wear a hoodie and a mask to cover the majority of the face.

The Final Note

Can Mosquitoes Bite Through Clothes?

Mosquitoes do not really care what you wear as long as they have access to your delicious skin to dine on your blood. Human sweat is their main attraction. It is really a matter of priority of choosing style or fashion over substance or comfort. In most cases, we depend on other deterrents such as the electric bat, incense sticks, liquid repellents, cream-based skin repellents, and sprays to get rid of mosquitoes. Clothing however plays an important role as what you wear covers 80 percent of your body and it is really the rest of the 20 percent we need to ensure is protected from mosquitoes. Mosquito bites may not always be harmful, however, some mosquito types transmit worms, parasites, viruses, and deadly diseases through their bites. It is always best to stay safe than be sorry later.
