What Are Seed Tick Bites? – Symptoms & Treatment

Seed Tick Bites

Like any other bug bite, Seed tick bites should be closely monitored for infection. Tick bites can result in red itchy bumps on the skin. If these symptoms do not disappear after a few days, or if the person who has been bitten develops an illness soon after, he should seek medical attention.

Seed ticks get their name because they look like tiny seeds. Ticks, as they carry microorganisms, are known to cause infections. Despite their small size, Seed ticks are just as dangerous as adult ticks. If the one gets infected, they need to get treatment for it as soon as possible.

How Do Seed Ticks Manage To Bite Humans?

Seed ticks have sharp, serrated teeth on the outside of their mouths.  This helps them burrow into the human skin.  Their saliva contains a neurotoxin that numbs the pain, so the individual will have no idea that he is being bitten.  The saliva of seed ticks also contain blood thinners which makes it easier for them to burrow into the skin of human beings.  Unless a person is allergic to the saliva of seed ticks there is a good chance that he will not know he is being bitten by a seed tick until much later after the bite.

Symptoms Of Seed Tick Bites

Listed below are some of the symptoms that a person mught experience after being bitten by a seed tick.  You must keep in mind that not everyone will experience all of these symptoms:

  • Redness and itching in the affected area
  • Bull’s eye rash.  This is common if Lyme disease has been transmitted to a person via a tick bite
  • Rocky mountain spotted fever
  • Numbness
  • Slight pain and inflammation
  • Flu like symptoms, eg chills, headaches, mild-low grade fever
  • Weakness
  • Pain and swelling in joints
  • Palpitaions
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea and vomiting

How To Remove A Tick?

If you plan to remove the tick by yourself at home you should follow utmost caution and follow these steps:

  • Don a pair of gloves so that you do not touch the tick at all.
  • Now take a pair of tweezers and grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible.
  • Flip the tick on its back and pull straight up, perpendicular to the skin.  This should ensure that the tick comes out intact.  Remember to not apply twisting or turning motions to get the tick out as that could lead to the mouth of it remaining embedded in the skin.
  • Do not crush the tick as this may cause infections as well.  Flush the tick down a toilet or drop it into a zip lock bag and allow it to suffocate.
  • Now take off the gloves and wash your hands with a disinfectant soap and running water.
  • Steralize the skin with rubbing alcohol as well, so any pathogens that might have escaped might be neutralized.

Alternative Methods Of Dealing With Seed Tick Bites

  • Apply a heated matchstick to the rear end of a tick so that it retreats out of the skin.
  • Apply strong tape, paint, nail polish or petroleum jelly to the tick to get it out of the skin.
  • Stimulate the tick with your finger, by rotating it clockwise or anti clockwise.  This will irritate the insect and he will automatically retreat out of the skin.
  • Douse a cotton ball inliquid soap and apply it to the tick, rotating it from time to time.  The tick will retreat from the skin and get caught up in the cotton ball.  This ball can then be discarded by flushing down the toilet.

It should be kept in mind that these are home remedies and are not advised by medical professionals.  If you plan to use any of these you must be careful so that it does not lead to further damage to the individual.
